Libraries and archives

The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica is a private library located in the heart of Amsterdam. It contains a collection of books and manuscripts that is generally considered unique in the world. The library’s collecting areas offer a cross-section of the various manifestations of Hermetic philosophy and Western Esotericism from late antiquity to the present. The BPH was founded by Amsterdam businessman Joost R. Ritman, who decided to make his collections part of the public domain in 1984. The library is not linked to any public institution or library. The library with its collections of books and manuscripts and its exhibition rooms are located on Bloemstraat 13-19, Amsterdam, and is freely accessible to the public. The Warburg Institute, today the University of London's School for Advanced Study, is a landmark in the history of esotericism research. After Aby Warburg's famous library had been moved from Hamburg to London in the 1930s, the Warburg Institute and Library has been the working place for such brilliant scholars as Edgar Wind, Ernst Cassirer, Frances Yates and D.P. Walker. With its huge collection of early modern and modern works on art, astrology, alchemy, magic, and related disciplines, the Warburg Institute remains an important research center for the study of esotericism. The Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene (Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health) in Freiburg (Germany) is a research center integrated in the University of Freiburg. It has a large collection of books, particularly on 20th-century developments in Germany and Europe. Its large archive, dealing primarily with the Institute's early history, comprises documents and material concerning the IGPP since its founding in 1950 until its move into the new location in 1996.
