From 1 September, 2008, Egil Asprem is a Ph.D. research assistant at the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents sub-department in Amsterdam. His research project is entitled "Esotericism and Scientific Naturalism in the 20th Century", and is funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The project aims to analyze exchanges, frictions, points of interconnection, dialogue and polemic between scientific and esoteric discourses in the 20th century. Central to the project are the roles played by psychical research and its professionalization in parapsychology, the boundary work of debunking literature institutionalized in organized sceptics' movements, and modern occultists' ambivalent relation to modern science.

Other research interests include Thelema, contemporary paganism, occult and (post)modern uses of Kabbalah, the history of ritual magic, and method and theory in the study of religion and esotericism . He has published several articles and essays on these and other topics, in both academic and popular journals.
