Marty Th. Bax

Dr. Marty Bax (*1956 Montreal) was first professionally educated as an artist and teacher, and subsequently trained as an art historian at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, from which she graduated in 1987. Her study included philosophy, social history and the relationship between word and image.
Bax has specialized in the relationship between art and esotericism between 1850 and 1950. In 2004 she received her PhD on the interdisciplinary study of the relationship between modern theosophy and art in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1920. It was published as: "Het web der schepping. Theosofie en kunst in Nederland van Lauweriks tot Mondriaan" [The web of creation. Theosophy and art in the Netherlands from Lauweriks to Mondrian], Amsterdam, SUN Publishers 2006 (see below for a synopsis).
Bax is director of Bax Art Concepts & Services, a service bureau for museums and other cultural institutions. She is art critic for Het Financieele Dagblad, the Dutch Financial Times, and has been editor-in-chief of the art journal Jong Holland.
Since 2001 Bax is secretary of the OVN, the Foundation for the advancement of the academic study of the history of freemasonry in the Netherlands (Stichting ter bevordering van wetenschappelijk Onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de Vrijmetselarij in Nederland). Bax is currently editor of the first book to appear on the methodology of art and Western Esotericism, together with ESSWE member Andréa Kroon: The Initiated Artist. Methodological Introduction into Western Esotericism in Art, 1800-1945, AUP Publishers Amsterdam. Information can be obtained through esotericartbook@yahoo.com.
