The cultural and historical value of the material heritage of esoteric currents, such as freemasonry, theosophy and anthroposophy was discussed at the international conference ‘Masonic and Esoteric Heritage’ (2005). The conference brought art historians, conservation specialists and exerts on western esotericism together for the first time. Scholars and PhD students presented papers on the relationship between art and western esotericism, and showed the beautiful interiors of lodge buildings and temples of ‘secret’ societies. A strong plea was made for the conservation of masonic and esoteric monuments as part of our collective cultural heritage.
The conference was organized by the OVN, an independent Dutch Foundation for the Advancement of Academic Research into the History of Freemasonry in the Netherlands, in cooperation with the Chair for Cultural Heritage, Conservation and Restoration and the Sub Dept. History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents, both at the University of Amsterdam.
The papers have been collected in a limited edition of the conference prints: Masonic & Esoteric Heritage. A New Perspective for Art and Conservation Policies, (Stichting OVN) Den Haag 2005, ISBN 908077782X, ill., 246 pages, € 10.- (plus € 3,52 p&p within Europe, € 5,95 outside Europe).
