David Pingree Memorial Seminar: Empires and Exact Sciences in Pre-Modern Eurasia May 29, 2006 -to- May 30, 2006
Historians of science devote great attention to the imposition and reception of modern scientific theories in colonial societies. Typical themes include the ways science was used rhetorically and politically to maintain the superiority of the colonizers, and strategies of rejection and appropriation by the colonized. Important as they are, these topics can give the misleading impression that encounters with alien science were strictly a phenomenon of modern global imperialism. In fact, political expansion and exposure to new cultures have been reflected in changing scientific traditions since antiquity, including the spread of Graeco-Roman dominance into the Near East and North Africa, and the subsequent merging of many former territories of the Roman Empire, along with parts of Iranian, Indian, and Chinese cultures, into the growing realm of Islam. This seminar will address the explicit recognition and assimilation (or modification) of ‘foreign’ elements in the exact sciences, changes within existing scientific traditions in imitation of foreign texts and practices.

Conference "Visions of Utopia: Masonic, Religious and Esoteric" November 03, 2007 -to- November 04, 2007
The idea that a perfect society could be planned, created and sustained can be traced back to Plato’s description of Atlantis, but it entered the popular imagination during the religious and cultural upheavals of Renaissance and Reformation when, in the early sixteenth century, Sir Thomas More published Utopia, his speculative vision of an ideal society. Since that time speculative philosophers, enthusiasts, dreamers, visionaries and reformers – of every shade of religious, political and philosophical opinion – have presented countless other visions of the ideal society to the world at large, ranging from Sir Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

Conference: The Threat and Allure of the Magical in Literature, Language, Philosophy, History and the Arts March 13, 2009 -to- March 14, 2009
"The Threat and Allure of the Magical in Literature, Language, Philosophy, History and the Arts" 17th Annual Interdisciplinary German Studies Conference at the University of California, Berkeley March 13-15, 2009 Dating back to the 9th Century Old High German Merseburg Incantations (die Merseburger Zaubersprüche) and their influence on the fairy-tale world of the Brothers Grimm, references to the magical boil forth from a wide range of cultural forms, from Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) in music to Werner Herzog’s Invincible in film. In silent film, modern literature and the arts, magic both heralded and haunted an artistic revolution in which the avant-garde and the occult recurrently intersected. In critical theory, ideology is often described in terms of a spell. Accordingly, this conference presents an opportunity to explore these cultural encounters with the magical and further inquire why this space of radical alterity carries such an allure and/or threat.

Call for Papers: Science and Magic - Ways of Knowing in the Renaissance (Graduate Conference) April 29, 2010 -to- April 30, 2010
Keynote Speaker: Bruce Moran, Department of History, University of Nevada, Reno In his Oration on the Dignity of Man, Pico della Mirandola described two forms of magic. There was that branch of sorcery consisting “wholly in the operations and powers of demons,” as well as a more benign craft pertaining to none other than “the highest realization of natural philosophy.” To many Renaissance thinkers, magic was a legitimate field of study as well as a potential threat to established orthodoxies. Inspired by this formulation, this interdisciplinary conference aims to consider scientific thought alongside magic and domains that modern vocabulary would describe as pseudoscience, such as alchemy and astrology, and invites papers related to diverse ways of magical and scientific knowing in the early modern world.

Call for Papers - Daimonic Imagination: Uncanny Intelligence May 06, 2011 -to- May 07, 2011
Call for Papers Daimonic Imagination: Uncanny Intelligence University of Kent, Canterbury, UK In this inter-disciplinary conference we will be addressing the question of inspired creativity. In many traditions the fount of creative vision and the source of divinatory insight is located in an intelligent ‘other’, whether this is termed god, angel, spirit, muse or daimon, or whether it is seen as an aspect of the human imagination and the activation of the ‘unconscious’ in a Jungian sense. From the artistic genius to the tarot reader, the sense of communication with another order of reality is commonly attested. Such communication may take the form of a flash of intuitive insight, psychic or clairvoyant ability, or spiritual possession. In art and literature many forms have been given to the daimonic intelligence, from angels to aliens, and in the realm of new age practices encounters with spiritual beings are facilitated through an increasing variety of methods including shamanism, hypnotherapy, mediumship, psychedelics, channelling and spirit materialisation. Theories of divinatory practices such as astrology, tarot or I Ching often assume a spirit or god-like intelligence at work in symbolic interpretation, and guardian angels abound in self-help literature.

Artificii Occulti: Knowledge and Discernment in the Artistic and Scientific Cultures of the Netherlands and the Spanish Habsburg World (16th-17th Centuries) May 12, 2011 -to- May 14, 2011
A Three-Day International Colloquium, Bern 12–14 May 2011 This conference explores the ways in which knowledge was shaped, shared, and circulated among artists, artisans, scientists and architects, as well as collectors, and connoisseurs in the Netherlands and the Spanish Habsburg World. By expanding our focus to include the Netherlands, Spain, and the Spanish Habsburg lands in Italy and the New World we hope to open new fields of research beyond the dominant Italian model. Among the foci of the contributions are epistemological dimensions of tacit and experimental knowledge; the intersections between art, alchemy, technology, natural philosophy, and theology; circulation of learned and hermetic knowledge; notions of virtuosity and ingenuity in various arts and crafts; antiquarianism and ‘love of the arts’ in the Netherlands and Spain; and the circulation and transformation of artists’ secrets across different cultural-geographical contexts.

Iconology: Neoplatonism and Art in the Renaissance September 15, 2011 -to- September 17, 2011
The aim of this conference, organized by the University of Vienna’s Institute of Art History in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici, is to conduct a debate regarding heterogeneous research approaches to the relationship between Neoplatonism and art. The intention is to enable art historians – both those concerned with the history of their own discipline and also those whose research is on the art and culture of the Italian Renaissance itself – to meet up with historians from a wide variety of specialist fields, so that advocates and opponents of the view that Neoplatonic philosophy influenced the fine arts during the Italian Renaissance can have an opportunity to discuss their different standpoints.

Alchemy and Medicine from Antiquity to the Enlightenment September 22, 2011 -to- September 24, 2011
CRASSH and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge Alchemists pursued many goals, from the transmutation of metals to the preservation of health and life. These pursuits were continually informed and modified by medical knowledge, while alchemical debates about nature, generation, and the achievability of perfection in turn impacted on medicine and natural philosophy. Alchemical texts circulated in print and manuscript; in courts, in households, and in the marketplace, both reflecting and contributing to debates about the body and the natural world. Alchemy was studied by physicians, clerics, natural philosophers, merchants, artisans and aristocrats; some drawn toward theoretical speculation, others towards empirical practice.

XIII CMRC Conference: Freemasonry and Empire October 22, 2011 -to- October 23, 2011
The field of Empire and post-colonial studies has received a good deal of attention in recent years. However, with the notable exception of Jessica Harland-Jacobs pioneering study, Builders of Empire, Freemasonry and British Imperialism, 1717-1927 (The University of North Carolina Press, 2007), an important aspect of associational life in this field – the study of freemasonry – has not received the attention that it deserves. This two-day event will therefore address this neglected topic and will include keynote lectures by Dr Jessica Harland-Jacobs, Associate Professor at the University of Florida, Professor Cécile Revauger, University of Bordeaux III, Professor Andrew Prescott, Kings College London, and Dr Jim Daniel, former Grand Secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England.

1. La magia en el mito; 2. El mito en la magia
