'Biography' of the former headquarters of the Dutch Trading Company (Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, 1919-1926), which traded (and virtually held control of the trade) on the Dutch East-Indian colonies. The building was designed by K.P.C. de Bazel. It now houses the the City Archive of Amsterdam. Description includes an extensive analysis by M. Bax of the esoteric iconography and structural elements of the building, inspired by modern theosophy and freemasonry. The building was contemparily known as the 'temple of money', but De Bazel meant it to be the 'Borubudur of Amsterdam'. |
